Dubai: While consumers have been hit hard in the past few weeks by stiff price increases, the situation has somehow improved lately, based on the latest consumer price index released on Tuesday by the UAE Ministry of Economy (MoE).

Sugar was one of the commodities that somehow endured the economic crunch, as prices remained the same since late January.

A locally packed two-kilogram bag of white sugar remains at Dh4.20, both at Dubai LuLu Centre and Al Ittihad Cooperative Society, while Carrefour Dubai sells it for Dh3.10.

Fine granulated sugar pure refine cane imported from Australia is available at Lulu Centre in Dubai for Dh6.95 per two kilogram, while Dubai's Al Ittihad Cooperative Society sells it for Dh6.50.

The MoE data showed that from the last week of January up to February 4, most of the prices of basic commodities have not increased.

It came as good news to the consumers, particularly the low-income group who have already endured several price rises.
