Dubai: Ten organisations in various fields received the Dubai Quality Award last night during a Grand Hyatt ceremony attended by about 1,000 officials from the government and private sectors.

Shaikh Maktoum Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, presented the award to the 2007 winners representing the education, healthcare, tourism, service, construction, manufacturing and finance sectors.

The organisations were honoured in three categories: the Dubai Quality Award, the Dubai Quality Appreciation Programme (DQAP) and the Gold Category. A special appreciation certificate for 'Achieving Excellence in the Processes Criteria' was presented for the first time this year.

The award started in 1994 and has since been considered the quality roadmap for all oganisations in Dubai.

"The Dubai Government is in the forefront of the quality drive and works closely with the private sector. The Dubai Quality Award ceremony honours those companies in Dubai that have introduced and benefited from quality concepts and practices that raise the level of quality across their entire operations," said Khalid Al Kassim, deputy director general for Planning and Development at the Department of Economic Development and DQA co-ordinator general.

Commenting on Prime Healthcare Group's award, ETA Ascon Star Group Director Ahmad Abdullah Ahmad Al Ghurair said the recognition is "a great inspiration" in their "journey to achieve service excellence by adopting best practices".

"The award is a recognition of our efforts to provide world-class personalised services in healthcare to this country. We are the first out-patient establishment to win this award and we hope to become a role model for other such establishments to follow," added Dr Jamil Ahmad, director of Prime Healthcare Group, part of ETA Ascon Star Group.

Peter Baltussen, chief executive of Commercial Bank of Dubai, another winner, lauded the government for taking the initiative to "infuse and enhance quality in the corporate world".

"Measurable effectiveness, benchmarking with the best in class, sustainable improvements, innovation in people management and customer centric processes were some of the key elements that helped us in our journey towards excellence," Baltussen told Gulf News.

Each submission for the DQA was reviewed by assessors according to procedures laid down by the Dubai Quality Award Secretariat that are modelled on the European Foundation for Quality Management excellence. After the entries were reviewed, a panel of jury members interviewed the teams that were tasked to assess the applicant companies to select the list of potential winners.

"Dubai's achievements now set regional and international benchmarks. It is of paramount importance to adopt a Quality and Excellence model, in line with international best practices, to sustain and build on our achievements," added Al Kassim.
