Dubai: Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority (Rakia) is exploring possibilities of developing an island resort in southeastern Bangladesh, an official said.

"They are interested in one of the islands in Cox's Bazar area to develop an exclusive tourist resort," said Shafique Alam Mehdi, chairman of Bangladesh Parjatan Corp, the national tourism organisation.

Rakia chief executive officer Khater Massaad has visited Bangladesh to view the site, the official said, adding that a Rakia team is planning another trip to Bangladesh soon.

Mehdi said the area, 150 kilometres from Chittagong, has "the world's longest unbroken natural beach," and is suitable for a hotel development. He said investors from Japan, Australia and Malaysia are also looking for tourist developments in that area.
