Dubai: Khalid Bin Sulayem, director-general of the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, on Sunday said a revised classification ratings system for all Dubai hotels will be announced soon.
Speaking at the launch of the Hotel Show, the Middle East's leading supplies trade fair for the region at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre, Bin Sulayem said the current system had been under review for some time and it was time for a change.
"We have been consulting with all sectors from developers to hotel management companies. With new projects coming on stream all the time we felt a review was necessary," he said.
Bin Sulayem pointed out that burgeoning mega projects such as Atlantis at the Palm would add an extra 2,000 rooms by the end of 2008. He expressed confidence that the market could sustain the extra capacity.
Bin Sulayem opined that room rates in Dubai were not too high as the quality and service levels were in alignment with the pricing.
Welcoming the entry of new budget hotels in the Dubai market, Bin Sulayem said they have a place in the overall portfolio of properties in Dubai on offer to the traveller.
