Dubai: A 70 per cent difference in prices of diesel at fuel stations in the emirates has created long queues of heavy vehicles at Adnoc stations in the northern emirates.
Adnoc offers subsidised diesel while stations of Enoc, Eppco and Emirates follow the global prices.
The difference of more than Dh6 per gallon is likely to encourage diesel smuggling and promote the grey market.
Queues yesterday extended a few kilometres from various Adnoc stations in Sharjah, Ajman and other northern emirates, while diesel terminals at other stations looked virtually empty. All stations other than Adnoc increased the price of diesel to a record Dh14.3 per gallon.
Sources from transport companies believe the opportunist diesel dealers are distributing smuggled diesel from Saudi Arabia, Oman and Iraq in the market at a 5 to 10 per cent discount, benefiting from the big price difference between the prices of diesel in these countries compared to the UAE.
