Dubai: Saudi authorities on Sunday released a large consignment of goods, held by Saudi Customs following confusion over the certificate of origin issued by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The decision to release came following a meeting held between high officials of the Dubai Chamber and Saudi Customs Department on Saturday that helped sort out the issues.

"The meeting came in the wake of the Saudi Customs authorities refusing to accept the certificate of origin issued by Dubai Chamber. According to Saudi Customs authority, the certificate didn't contain a stamp of Dubai Chamber which resulted in the detention of cargo exported by a Dubai Chamber member at a Saudi port.

Following the meeting, the Saudis immediately decided to release the cargo and agreed to recognise the COO issued by Dubai Chamber," a Dubai chamber statement said.

High-level meeting

Hamad Bu Amim, director-general of the Dubai Chamber and Mohammad Khalifa Bin Fahad Al Muhairi, director-general of the UAE Federal Customs Authority met Saleh Bin Manee Al Khilewi, director-general of the Saudi Customs Department in Riyadh on Saturday.

"We have completely understood the Saudi point of view regarding the acceptance of our certificates of origin and we have decided to stamp and sign all our COOs for Saudi Arabia and also to revise the mechanism of issuing of these certificates in the future," Bu Amim said.

Meanwhile, a visiting Saudi Customs delegation has praised the advanced technologies and procedures adopted by Abu Dhabi Customs.

During the two-day visit of the delegation last week, the two sides exchanged experiences and the Saudi team visited the Abu Dhabi Customs outlets and offices.
