Feel the need to chill out? Then the Skiboard World Cup 2008 is the place to be.
Get ready for some fast-paced action this month as Dubai plays host to the Skiboard World Cup 2008. A relatively new entrant in the international sporting arena, skiboarding is becoming increasingly popular because of its combination of the best elements of skiing, snowboarding and
inline-skating.
The event will be held at the Mall of the Emirates on May 22. This year, competitors from 14 countries will be showcasing their talent at the Skiboard World Cup and will push each other to the limit in a bid to win top honours in the competition.
Marius Sprinceana, president and founder of the World Skiboard Association, says, "This is the first time that such a major winter sports contest will be held indoors and the excellent viewing facilities at Ski Dubai will ensure a high level of visibility for the public; something that will really help with the promotion of this exciting activity."
Mike Mahoney, Ski Dubai's general manager, is also excited about the event. "Skiboarding is a relatively new sport, but is rapidly growing in popularity across the world, so we are very pleased and honoured to be hosting this year's World Cup," he says. "Ski Dubai is the perfect environment to showcase skiboarding's thrills, as it offers competition standard winter sports facilities located in one of the city's most popular malls. This year's Skiboard World Cup is going to be highly accessible for the general public."
Spectators will be treated to elite skiboarders performing some stunning manoeuvres and aerial tricks and turns. Mahoney adds, "We are expecting that around 400 spectators will turn up each day to watch the action and be part of the excitement of this international event."
Ski Dubai offers facilities for skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing.The facility offers a choice of five runs, as well as a 3,000 square metre snow park with tobogganing, a twin-track bobsled ride, tubing, and the opportunity to
train with international Ski instructors at its
Snow School.
