Sharjah: American University of Sharjah (AUS) will be offering a new bachelor’s degree in biology, starting August 2008.
The programme received the approval of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research following the recommendations of the Ministry’s Commission for Academic Accreditation.
Dr Fawwaz Jumean, Head of the Biology and Chemistry Department at AUS, said the programme represents an important milestone in the growth of AUS and is an indicator of the university’s recognition of the regional need for scientists and the important role biology plays in all aspects of life. He said the new course aims at enhancing the technical and problem-solving skills of students in a rapidly growing field of scientific knowledge.
“The world is now experiencing a revolution in genetic engineering and molecular biology that is equal in scope to the industrial revolution and the computer age. Astounding applications are underway in the fields of medicine, microbiology, immunology and agriculture. Biologists have many career options that include species conservation, ecosystems management, environmental protection, genetic research, biomedical engineering, marine science and bioinformatics,” said Dr Jumean.
