Al Ain: The oasis city's municipality has awarded three contracts totalling Dh904 million to a private company for cleaning and waste disposal in the city.
The contracts were signed by Awad Bin Hasoum Al Darmaki, General Manager of Al Ain Municipality, and Khalid Abdullah Ahmad Al Gurair, Director of ETA Ascon Holdings. ETA's subsidiary, Modern Building Maintenance (MBM) will handle the contracts.
Al Darmaki said the municipality has allocated four out of five contracts of this nature. The first contract was signed in May last year and work on contract number three will be given next month.
"Once all these five contracts are awarded, the whole project of gathering, transferring and recycling solid waste in the emirate will be implemented using advanced techniques, in line with the best international standards," he said.
Contract two, which was signed yesterday with MBM in cooperation with Dallah of Saudi Arabia and Urbaser from Spain, operating under the umbrella of ETA, is worth Dh464 million over seven years and covers the southern area of Al Ain and its suburbs, an area of 7,900 square kilometres with a population of 220,000 and which produces about 400 tonnes of waste daily.
Under contract four, worth Dh138 million, MBM and Dalah-Urbaser will operate a medical waste incinerator for 10 years.
The incinerator will dispose of eight tonnes of medical waste daily. An incinerator to treat animal waste will also be built.
Contract five, worth Dh302 million, is valid for 20 years. MBM and Dallah-Urbaser will operate a dumping yard and a dangerous waste cell.
Both companies will also set up a crushing plant to deal with construction waste.
Al Gurair said, "We consider this as a reward for the quality and high standards that the ETA Ascon Holdings companies have always strived to maintain."
