Al Ain: Careless drivers of trucks and cement mixers will face heavy penalties for dumping waste material at roadsides, public places, and other non-designated areas in the city.
The health department of Al Ain Municipality has yesterday launched a campaign against truckers who improperly dump waste and discard items in public areas.
A municipality official said it was the responsibility of construction firms and drivers of heavy vehicles, like all other individuals, to maintain the city's clean atmosphere and follow the rules and regulations to this effect. The department has, however, found some truck and cement mixers violating the municipal regulations.
"Under the campaign, we have intensified inspection patrols to check the violation of health practices," said Ahmad Al Niyadi, head of public affairs at the health department.
He said the maintenance of cleanliness in the Oasis City is a top priority for the department and it will not tolerate violation of rules and regulations.
Trucks and vehicles carrying any material or cement must be properly secured. The loaded material should also not leak on the road as this not only harms the city's look but also the environment.
Al Niyadi has asked all companies and business houses to guide and educate drivers to empty the cargo remnants and dump the waste material at designated places, such as waste compounds. Drivers found violating the rules would be penalised according to the law and trucks would also be impounded for a month, he pointed out.
The municipality opened a new waste-dumping site outside the city limits in March 2004. It is located at the west of the Compost Plant in Zakher district, some 25km away from the town centre.
As per the municipal law, throwing debris and waste in streets, residential areas, open pieces of land, and anywhere in the city other than the specified dumping site is a violation.
