Dubai: A total of 150 volunteers from the Dawoodi Bohra community took part in the 'Clean Up the World' campaign in the Ayal Nasser area on Naif Road, Deira, on Friday.
Volunteers had an early start at 7.30am, and collected approximately 200 bags of garbage from the area.
Shabbir Abbas, organiser, said: "We wanted to create awareness about cleanliness around the mosque, which has been there for 25 years. There is a greater need for awareness about hygiene and cleanliness among the people living in the area."
The activity was part of the wider clean-up campaign held across the UAE from November 18 to 21. A total of 20,000 volunteers are expected to have taken part in the venture organised by Dubai Municipality.
The campaign aimed to increase environmental awareness and encourage the recycling, reuse and reduction of waste.
"We want to participate in all the activities organised by the Government of Dubai and join hands with Dubai Municipality. The community has been here for a long time and my father has been living in Dubai for 45 years. There is a lot of social responsibility on us to keep the city clean and co-operate with local authorities," he said.
Garbage collection bags for the activity were provided by Dubai Municipality.
The Dubai Municipality has been taking part in the global cleanliness campaign since 1994.
In 2007, more than 18,000 people participated in removing 4,000 tonnes of waste from various areas.
Other activities included a clean-up in Nad Al Hamr, the removal of abandoned vehicles, a can collection competition at the Ras Al Khor wildlife sanctuary and a clean-up in the Nad Al Sheba area.
