Ras Al Khaimah: The authorities have given shape to a comprehensive plan for the development of the southern areas of the emirate with the help of the Institute of Urban and Regional Planning and Design of the American University of Sharjah (AUS).
Shaikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, reviewed the final draft of the structure plan at a meeting attended by experts from the AUS and top officials of government departments at Al Dhaid Palace.
Shaikh Saud said the initiative was part of the overall strategy for the development of the emirate in order to create economic development opportunities.
The plan addresses issues such as land use, development planning, efforts to stimulate economic growth, housing, transportation and tourism development in the southern areas of the emirate which covers around 1,300 square kilometres.
Strategic location
Varkki Pallathucheril, Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Graduate Programme in Urban Planning at AUS, said, "The southern areas of Ras Al Khaimah have enormous potential for development due to its strategic location with links to Dubai and Sharjah and to the East Coast.
"The plan will take full advantage of the opportunities existing in the region," he said adding that the final document would be submitted to the Ras Al Khaimah Municipality after incorporating the suggestions and recommendations made by Shaikh Saud.
Amer Moustafa, Associate Professor at the School of Architecture and Design, AUS, said the structure plan has identified development opportunities for industries, residential, tourism and mountain developments and natural preserves to be developed in the southern areas.
