Dubai: In 2003, a Dubai court handed seven Asians different jail terms and ordered them to pay blood money to the relatives of seven victims who died in a massive fire that gutted a warehouse where dozens of fireworks were stored illegally.
The Public Prosecution charged them with smuggling fireworks and illegally storing them in a warehouse in Dubai. They were also charged with accidentally causing seven deaths in the accident.
The court ordered the defendants to compensate the victims whose properties got damaged in the fire.
The act of illegally possessing and storing fireworks is incriminated by Article 36 of the Federal Penal Code, which says any suspect who illegally possesses or uses any explosive materials or any firearm faces a maximum imprisonment of three years or a fine of Dh150 to Dh3,000 or both.
Article 37 of the Federal Penal Code states that any suspect who illegally sells weapons or explosive materials faces imprisonment of six months to ten years or a fine of Dh5,000 to Dh100,000 or both.
