Agreement signed for digging water wells
THE MINISTER of Electricity and Water, Humaid Bin Nasser Al Owais, has signed an agreement with a local company specialising in digging water wells. This company will dig 50 experimental and production wells in different areas in the Northern Emirates. "This Dh5.5 million contract comes within the ministry's plan to provide water to every home in the UAE," the minister said.

Sharjah merchants vote for management board
DEMOCRACY WAS at work in Sharjah when members of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry cast their ballots for the election of a new 19-member board of management for a two-year term. The election, part of a plan worked out by His Highness Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah to democratise the functioning of the chamber, was held in the Africa Hall.
Top award for Mother Teresa
MOTHER TERESA has received India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna (Jewel of India) from President Sanjiva Reddy. Mother Teresa, who has dedicated her life to the world's destitute, was given the award, first announced on January 26. "I accept this award as in the case of the Nobel prize in the name of the poor," she said.

Israel approves colonies in major Arab town
THE ISRAELI government, in a decision that split Prime Minister Menachem Begin's Cabinet down the middle, decided to establish two live-in schools in Hebron, approving Jewish colonies in the heart of an occupied Arab town for the first time.

PLO leader calls on Zayed and Rashid
ABU IYAD, a top Palestinian leader, who is currently here as part of a tour of Arab countries, said the recent French and Austrian initiatives to support Palestinian self-determination was in need of a follow-up by the Arabs and the Palestine Liberation Organisation. Abu lyad met President His Highness Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi (top picture) and described him as "a man of concrete stands and a noble Arab."
