Dubai: Dubai Municipality inspectors, in cooperation with Dubai Police and the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department, arrested 484 people last month including street vendors, beggars and illegal car washers.
According to Obaid Salem Al Shamsi, Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality for Administrative and General Services Affairs, the sweep against law-breakers also resulted in the seizure of several low-quality goods, pirated CDs and food items.
Civic inspectors conduct daily spot checks in streets and public places to prevent street vending, begging and car washing in public places by individuals in violation of a ruling by the Ministry of Labour in this regard.
"The nine inspectors at the Security and Control Unit of the Administrative Affairs Department carry out regular checks. In March 2008, they caught a total of 484 people including 329 street vendors, 61 beggars, 69 car washers and 25 illegal butchers and fish cleaners," he said.
He noted that a total of 2,834 counterfeit products including ready-made garments, perfumes, cameras, and watches that were fake international brands were confiscated.
Also, some 2,519 DVDs with pirated films, 250 pornographic movies, 250 foodstuff items including boxes of fruits and vegetables were seized last month.
Al Shamsi explained that the law-breakers, who belong to various nationalities, would be handed over to the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department for deportation in coordination with Dubai Police. He said the seized goods would be destroyed and disposed off safely.
