Dubai: Two firefighters, including an Emirati officer, died while battling a fire that broke out in a building under construction at Palm Jumeirah on Friday, Gulf News has learnt.
According to official sources, the firefighters died of asphyxia and their bodies were recovered from the gutted building early on Saturday. Thick smoke engulfed the seven-storey building and hampered the search for the bodies till the morning, officials said.
According to preliminary investigations, the fire broke out on the ground floor of the building, which was being used as a warehouse to store construction materials. It took firefighters more than 10 hours to douse the fire which started at around 9am on Friday.
Gulf News has learnt that the Emirati officer from Dubai Civil Defence and the other firefighter from Federal Civil Defence were buried yesterday. A Civil Defence spokesperson said workers at the building were evacuated safely.
Fire experts from Dubai Police have started an inquiry into the fire.
