Dubai: The owner of a missing iguana has come forward after reading of his discovery in Gulf News.
Igu the common Iguana broke out of his cage by making a hole in the wire. He was found wandering around a car park in Satwa by a group of office workers, who captured him in a wastepaper basket.
Roydin Roach, GM, Ortronics, who found the bright green animal said: "It was just still when I found it, I thought it was dead. Then it started running. It was quite difficult to catch as it was snapping back at us. It took us about 15 or 20 minutes to get it into the basket."
Although Iguanas can bite or snap, they are actually vegetarian and are diurnal animals that sleep at night.
Igu has since been taking a short holiday at Dubai Zoo, after Gulf News arranged for his collection.
Ahmad Sharafi has had Igu as a pet since he was 10cm long - he is now almost a metre.
"Igu made a hole in his cage and escaped. I think he chewed through the wire, because it's a bit old. It's a tiny hole though, I don't know how he got out. Igu is now one year and eight months old, which is pretty much how long I've had him for. I used to be able to hold him in the palm of my hand and I have lots of pictures and a video of him."
Common Iguanas are native to South America and are often kept as pets. Dubai Zoo currently has three common Iguanas that were discovered in the Jumeirah and Rashidiya areas of Dubai.
Gulf News is currently working with Dubai Zoo to reunite Sharafi with Igu, who both live in the Satwa apartment block next to the office where he was discovered.
