Abu Dhabi: A 23-year-old-man died on Friday after inhaling pesticides used to fumigate his apartment.
Mohammad Ali Mansoor, an Indian, died after he dozed off in the flat.
Alone in the apartment at the time, he called his friends when he realised he was feeling ill. They arranged an ambulance and informed the police. However, Mansoor died on the way to the hospital.
Mansoor, who worked in a pharmacy, lived in a three-bedroom apartment on Al Falah Street, shared by 12 men.
On Thursday, the night before the incident, a pest control company hired by the roommates sprayed the apartment to get rid of cockroaches and pests.
The residents did not return to the apartment, except Mansoor, who went back after Friday afternoon prayers and dozed off on the couch. A few hours later he awoke feeling dizzy.
"At around 5.30pm Mansoor called me. He sounded very weak and said he was feeling numb. He said he could not breathe properly and asked me to get help. I was in Dubai at the time," said Nahas, one of his roommates.
"An ambulance arrived very quickly. The rescue team gave him oxygen and first aid. He could still talk and said some words. But sadly he did not make it to the hospital."
Hailing from Kodungalloor in Kerala, India, Mansoor had been in the UAE for nearly a year.
"No case will be made against anyone as this was clearly an accident," a police official said.
