Abu Dhabi: Five men suffered serious burns in a fire that erupted in an apartment on Sunday afternoon, the police said.
The fire erupted around 12pm in an apartment on the second floor of a building within block A of Khalifa Complex, located opposite Abu Dhabi Mall in the Tourist Club Area.
All the five were Indian men working as cleaners. They were tasked with cleaning the recently-vacated apartment.
"Four out of the five men suffered third degree burns. All were cleaners. They were cleaning up the recently vacated apartment using some solvent to remove glue left behind by carpet used by the previous tenant, while the mishap happened," said an official, who requested anonymity. The apartment has been completely damaged, but quick intervention helped contain the damage, he said.
Investigations are still on to determine the actual cause of the fire.
However, eye witnesses say the fire was triggered by a cigarette. It is still too early to comment on the cause, said the official.
