Dubai: Five people drowned and more than 40 people were injured in sea accidents since the beginning of this year until May, a senior official has said.
Colonel Pilot Anas Al Matroushi, Deputy Director of Dubai Police Operations Department for Transportation and Rescue Affairs, warned beachgoers against ignoring changing weather patterns in the next few days, as changes occur in the sea conditions and increase the risk of drowning, especially for people who cannot swim.
Colonel Al Matroushi said Dubai Police's Rescue Department stepped up their preparations for summer by increasing the number of sea patrols on the beaches.
Major Juma'a Al Falasi, Director of Dubai Police Rescue Department, said that five people drowned since the beginning of this year until May while 42 others were injured.
One person died and four people were injured in drowning cases reported between June and August in 2007.
Major Al Falasi said sea rescue patrols are present on Al Hamriya Port, Dubai Creek, Open beach in Jumeirah and Al Mamzar beach. He called on beachgoers to call emergency number 999 in case of any accident and specify the exact location.
