Abu Dhabi: Poor response to registration process for national identity card over past one and half month has prompted the Emirates Identity Authority to issue a warning to Emiratis and expatriates who have failed to register so far.
"We are considering serious action against people who don't register for national identity card and population register," said Darwish Al Zarouni, Director General of the Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA), in a statement.
"Although registration of expatriates started on June 1, just 2,725 residents registered till ... June 13," said Al Zarouni.

The official said work is in progress to link the identity card with several services, which will enable the holders to use it as a multipurpose smart card.
The card will eventually enable the holders to use it as labour card, driving licence, health facilities, e-payment, e-purse, e-gate, and family book of citizens, and while travelling to Gulf Cooperation Council countries (for citizens only), and transportation.
Al Zarouni said people do not discharge their legal responsibility to register due to carelessness. "It is the duty of both citizens and expatriates to make the population register and national identity card project a success." He requested the public to complete the registration as scheduled.
Emiratis must complete registration by year-end. Expatriate employees in government sector have to finish it by October. The registration for expat professionals started on July 1.
