Historic buildings of UAE for restoration

Buildings and sites of historic importance are to be restored and preserved. Already six historic buildings have been selected for restoration on the basis of recommendations of a UNESCO consultant who conducted a survey of historic sites in all the emirates. The six sites selected are Shindaghah and Bastakia areas in Dubai, Sharjah's old souk, Ajman's fort, ancient buildings of Al Ain, the water tower in Umm Al Quwain, and the hilltop fortress in Fujairah.

Three Palestinians Killed in Israeli sea-borne raid

The Israelis killed three Palestinian commandos in a sea-borne raid on the south Lebanese coast. They said a leftist Lebanese gunman also died in the raid at Saksakiye, 40 km from the Israeli border. Witnesses said about 15 Israelis stormed ashore from rubber dinghies. The Israelis returned to a gunboat cruising offshore.

Stage collapses as world beauty is picked

The 1979 Miss Universe contest ended in chaos when the stage collapsed moments after Miss Venezuela, 18-year-old Maritza Sayalero, was declared winner. The 78 contestants in evening dress were filing onto the raised dais at Perth's entertainment centre when part of the stage work fell in amid a loud rumbling noise and screams from the girls.

Three states in OAU walkout

Three countries walked out of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) summit during a debate over the divisive Western Sahara issue which threatened to prevent discussion of several other major topics before closing session. The three countries, Morocco, Senegal and Gabon left the chamber after a hotly-contested vote in favour of a referendum in the phosphate-rich territory to decide whether it wants total independence or to remain under Mauritanian and Moroccan rule.

India still trying to form new government

India's two largest opposition parties are now trying to form a new government, must still agree on a common leader to succeed outgoing Premier Morarji Desai. No decision was taken when the Janata (secular) and the official Congress Party discussed the leadership issue.
