Abu Dhabi: The UAE is to build a Dh15.5 million check point at its border with Oman, the Ministry of Interior announced in a statement on Monday.
As per the directives of Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Minister of Interior, the Department of Construction and Maintenance will commence work at the Kathem Melaha check point by September.
The move forms part of the ministry’s decision to develop border points and to facilitate better services to those entering or leaving the UAE.
Captain Engineer Abdul Hakim Salim Al Tamimi, of the Department of Construction and Maintenance said traffic across the border was growing due to tourism and commerce.
Noting that over 110,000 people and 61,500 vehicles cross the border every month, he said the project was necessary to improve existing procedures.
The check point will have separate tracks to receive cars, light buses and trucks as well as a customs area to clear cargo. The road works related to the check point will be carried out in cooperation with the Sharjah Department of Public Works.
