Abu Dhabi: A permanent national authority to implement and follow up on the demographic structure dossier has been set up in the UAE.
His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, made the decision during a meeting with Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Interior Minister and Chairman of the Demographic Structure Committee.
Shaikh Mohammad was briefed on the committee's achievements and progress in work.
The newly-established authority will be responsible for monitoring the completion and implementation of demographic policies.
The Vice-President gave the go-ahead to the new body to take necessary steps, including the implementation of 66 initiatives, to improve demographic structure in selected sectors.
The Cabinet will review these steps and issue appropriate decisions regarding them.
"Our future and national identity are strongly connected to the demographic structure issue, which requires collaborative efforts and teamwork," Shaikh Mohammad said.
The Vice-President stressed the need for a clear vision to find practical mechanisms and reach a reasonable perception for the future of the generations ahead.
He listened to a presentation by Shaikh Saif on the progress of the committee's work and its main aspects, in the presence of Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs; Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister; Mohammad Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, and Dr Anwar Mohammad Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Deputy Chairman of the committee.
The main aspects of the committee's work include demographic indicators and details, other strategies related to the job market as well as the relationship between demographic structure and national identity.
Shaikh Mohammad was also briefed on the knowledge-oriented economy, increasing productivity and income per capita of Emirati citizens, and the controversial relation between these factors and the demographic structure.
The report highlighted the UAE's regional and international position in terms of data and statistics, which reflect the future perception of demographic structure and its impacts.
