Fujairah: The Minister of Environment and Water on Tuesday promised a new plan to fight marine pollution in cooperation with a United Nations Development Programme.

Rashid Ahmad Bin Fahd was speaking during a visit to the east coast on the International Earth Day.

The minister did not reveal more details, but said it was part of a number of new measures that also include the introduction of a new environmental law pertaining to the stone-crushing industry.

He said the draft of the new law is still under consultation and appraisal by both government ministries and local governments of the northern emirates, pending its review by the ministerial council.

The minister also announced plans to build 68 new dams in the northern emirates, 37 of which will be in Fujairah.

Bin Fahd said building of these new dams will start by the middle of the year, according to plans drawn up by the Ministry of Public Works.
