Abu Dhabi: Family members of an Australian-Indian man who has been in a coma for two weeks following a road accident say they are waiting for a miracle for his recovery.
"Doctors said Arun is still in a coma and not responding to the medication," said Kiran D'Costa, the twin brother of the injured man. Fortunately, Arun's wife Wilma and their 11-month-old daughter, Andrea, who were also injured in the crash, have moved from the intensive care unit to the common ward of an Abu Dhabi hospital, said Kiran.
Arun D'Costa, 36, who works as a mechanical engineer, settled in Australia with his wife Wilma, 31, a nurse, and their daughter Andrea. The crash occurred nearby Shahama in Abu Dhabi on January 15, on the eve of their return to Australia, having spent two weeks visiting family in the UAE. They have been in Australia for three years and recently obtained citizenship.
The family is finding it difficult to tell Arun's wife about his condition. "We try to convince her that Arun is well in another ward. We have to take care of her condition as she is still in bed with serious leg fractures. She has to be moved to another hospital in Abu Dhabi to treat a projected bone of the nose which is obstructing her eyes," said Kiran.
The only solace for the family is baby Andrea, who has started to speak a few familiar words, despite her serious injuries. "Doctors say a CT scan found a blood clot in the left side of the brain. She also has a fracture in her left thigh." She has become very close to her grandmother, who has come from India to look after her.
Abu Dhabi police said a slippery road caused by rain caused the accident. "A trailer driver lost control of his vehicle and went to the middle lane from the right lane, hitting the family's car," a police spokesperson told Gulf News.
