Dubai: Medical students should consider their own lifestyle before deciding on a clinical field of practice.
Paediatrics, for example, should be considered because it allows part-time work. However, negatives include the "upsetting" death of children under medical care and lack of interaction with patients, which makes diagnoses more difficult.
Prof Mutairu Ezimokhai, postgraduate dean & advisor to ObGyn Services, Continuing Education Department, Dohms, made the comments at the third UAE Medical Students' Conference inaugurated in Dubai yesterday.
"Personal values," he said, "should be matched with the clinical speciality. You have to know the nature of the soil before you plant the seed into it."
Emergency medicine was cited as being bad for students with families, due to lack of time at home and long working hours. Family medicine, however, was given as a good choice for those with dependant minors.
Prof Ezimokhai continued that medical students should seek career advice before deciding whether to go into emergency, paediatric, surgical or family medical practice.
The conference was held at the Al Bustan Rotana Hotel, and was organised by the Emirates Medical Students Society (EMSS).
