Al Ain: Tawam Hospital, a leading medical facility in the UAE, has received two awards at the Arab Health exhibition in Dubai in recognition of its role in the development of the health industry.

The awards were given for achievements in the fields of surgery and the specialist achievement in quality healthcare improvement, according to a spokesperson at the hospital.

The awards were given at a ceremony held recently at Dubai Jumeirah Beach Hotel.

The hospital also unveiled the first mobile mammography unit in the UAE at Arab Health 2008.

The spokesperson said recent studies showed that one in 10 women are at a risk of developing cancer.

Screening

"This unique programme [mobile mammography] aims to reach the women ... and seeks to screen up to 20 patients per day," said Michael E. Heindel, CEO of Tawam Hospital.

He said by screening more women, more regularly, the hospital hopes to significantly reduce the number of fatalities.

The ultrasound images are instantly transmitted to the support team at the hospital where they are diagnosed and within hours the correct treatment can be recommended to the patient, he added.
