Abu Dhabi: The Authority for Culture and Heritage has launched the Qalam project to publish and support Emirati literateurs.
Juma Al Qubaisi, Director of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair and Director of the National Library at the Authority for Culture and Heritage (Adach), said Qalam, which means 'pen', is part of the authority's strategy to support local writers and young talent by publishing their work of all types, whether stories, novels, plays or poetry.
Six Emirati writers - Abdullah Abdul Wahab, Rawdha Al Bulooshi, Ibtisam Al Mualla, Fatma Al Mazroui, Mohammad Hassan Ahmad and Sa'ad Juma - will be introduced under the Qalam project.
Al Qubaisi said works written by expatriates in the UAE and other Gulf countries will also be published under Qalam to create a database for Arab literature and translate it into other languages.
Mohammad Khalaf Al Mazroui, Director General of Adach, said: "The project comes in line with President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan's decision to designate 2008 as the National Identity Year."
