Dubai: Nineteen scientists were honoured for completing research under an awards programme under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance.
The scientists from fields like microbiology and genetics were honoured during the Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences (SHAMS) ceremony for the academic terms 2001-2002 and 2003-2004, on Tuesday.
Humaid Mohammad Obaid Al Qattami, Health Minister and chairman of the awards, attended the ceremony.
Mirza Al Sayegh, representative of Shaikh Hamdan, told guests the awards sought to make the UAE pioneers of science and "not just consumers".
"SHAMS has embarked upon a new phase with the establishment of multiple awards and the initiation of several programmes in the various branches of medical sciences that allows scientists and scientific institutions alike to compete with each other and offers them the opportunity to report on the most recent advances in their fields of interest," he said.
Growing
Al Sayegh said the awards programme has grown, receiving 42 applications for a grant in the 2007-2008 term.
He said the full awards ceremony would be held in December.
