Dubai: Al Maktoum Hospital, which is 57 years old, will soon turn into a museum and will feature old pictures and used medical equipment, Gulf News has learnt.
"The old part of the building will turn into a museum. The change has already been approved but as we are still at the preliminary stages, we do not yet know when the actual change will take place," said Rashad Mohammad Bukhash, Director of Architectural Heritage Projects at Dubai Municipality.
The new museum will be taken under the wing of Dubai Municipality, who will supervise the conversion and be responsible for the old wing.
Al Maktoum Hospital was the first hospital to be established in Dubai. It was originally constructed in 1951 after World War II, and then continued its several development projects from 1952 to 1972, under the directives of the late Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum.
"The respiratory department will be shifted to Rashid Hospital," said Dr Mirza Al Sayegh, Consultant Physician at Al Maktoum Hospital and Head of Emirates Respiratory Society at the Emirates Medical Association.
Al Maktoum Hospital currently holds the respiratory department and treats patients with tuberculosis in private rooms, in addition to conducting medical checks for visa and residency purposes.
Over the years, the hospital has converted into a primary health clinic. "We offer limited services and many of our staff and departments have already shifted to Rashid Hospital.
The clinic is almost closed except for the respiratory unit, and we will probably evacuate the hospital next month," said Dr Al Sayegh.
