Sharjah: A number of antiquities that were seized at the Sharjah border will be on display on Friday to commemorate International Museum Day.
The Sharjah Archaeology Museum will open a temporary exhibition in the foyer to showcase antiquities that were smuggled through the country, according to an official at the Sharjah Museum Department.
The event coincides with celebrations marking International Museum Day on May 18, which is held under the theme, "Museums: Agents of Social Change and Development."
International Museum Day has been celebrated since 1977. Up to 20,000 museums in more than 70 countries participated in last year's 30th International Museum Day.
Activities leading to the main event kicked off yesterday and will take place until May 18 at Sharjah Art Museum, Archaeology Museum, Science Museum, Maritime Museum and Natural History Museum.
UAE national artists have also expressed their interest in participating at the event by displaying works of art portraying contemporary culture, which includes the works of Dr Nagat Meky, Mohammad Kazim, and Jasem Al Awadi.
"Hosting such events are part of our attempts to shed light on the works of some of the artists who have contributed to shaping the arts scene in the country," said Hind Bin Darwish, event coordinator and curator of Sharjah Museum for Contemporary Arab Art.
