Dubai: A Qatari suspect has denied consuming hashish during his 24-hour visit to Dubai, heard a court on Thursday.

The 45-year-old Qatari suspect told the Dubai Court of First Instance that he didn't consume hashish in Dubai and claimed before the presiding judge that he "just came to spend 24 hours in the Emirate".

The Public Prosecution charged him with consuming tetra-hydro cannabinol (THC), an active component of hashish which was found in the defendant's urine.

The judge agreed to adjourn the case until the suspect proves his claim that he came to spend a day.

An anti-narcotics first corporal at Dubai police told the public prosecution: "An informant reported to Dubai Police's Anti-Narcotics Department that the suspect was consuming drugs in Al Muraqqabat area. A squad searched him and his place where he was staying but didn't find any narcotics."

Medical reports confirmed that the suspect's urine contained hashish. The suspect has been detained since December 16 and he will appear in court next month.
