Dubai: A customs employee will spend one year in jail for accepting bribes to bypass an iris scan during the processing of 40 outpasses for illegal immigrants, ruled a court yesterday.
The Dubai Court of First Instance also fined the 27-year-old Emirati employee, H.A., Dh8,000 [the equivalent of the bribe amount].
Presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir also sentenced 25-year-old Emirati employee, B.A., and three Indians, 38-year-old, B.T., 42-year-old, T.K., and 47-year-old, P.P., to one year in jail each. The Indian defendants will be deported after serving their sentence. The Public Prosecution charged them with negotiating with H.A. to issue the passes to others.
The customs employee pleaded innocent before the court and denied that he collected Dh8,000 from the defendants.
