Dubai: A clerk at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will spend five years in jail for stealing an engineer's mobile phone, a court has ruled.
The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the 24-year-old Emirati clerk, N.B., in absentia.
The Public Prosecution charged him with sneaking into the office of 31-year-old British engineer, O.A., who was in the prayer room at the time, and stealing his phone, worth Dh2,700.
The engineer testified: "I left my phone on my desk and went to perform the noon prayer. I returned after 20 minutes and didn't find my phone. A few months later, the police informed me that the accused was arrested and the stolen item was found in his possession."
Records show the accused confessed to stealing the phone before he was referred to court.
The initial verdict is still subject to appeal.
