Dubai A woman who came to Dubai to help treat her daughter's asthma was nearly trafficked for Dh28,000 by a woman who claimed to be helping her.
The 36-year-old Ukrainian woman, K.S., denied that she tried to sexually exploit the penniless Moldavian woman by offering her for sale and pleaded innocent before the Dubai Court of First Instance.
The 27-year-old mother, M.O., claimed that doctors asked her to treat her sick daughter in a relatively warm country such as the UAE.
"Doctors advised me to bring my daughter to Dubai and treat her for asthma. I knew K.S. from before and she processed my visit visa," M.O. claimed in her statement to the public prosecution.
"I didn't attempt to exploit her poverty neither did I try to sell her... it's a misunderstanding which I explained to the public prosecutor... she will clarify what really happened," K.S. told presiding judge Saeed Salem Bin Sarm during yesterday's hearing.
The Public Prosecution charged the Ukrainian with violating Federal Law No 51, 2006 to combat human trafficking, when she offered to sell the woman for Dh28,000 to a police informant. She was also charged with returning after deportation without obtaining the interior minister's permission.
"K.S. helped me come here to treat my daughter. I stayed at her place in Mirdiff. Police arrested us when I was with the suspect and another man, whom I didn't know, looking for medicine for my girl," the Moldavian woman said.
Tip-off
"Following a tip-off, an informant posed as a buyer as the suspect wanted to sell the victim. The defendant was arrested in a sting operation. She also offered to sell a 15-year-old girl for Dh35,000," a policeman testified.
