Dubai: Police on Sunday described the circumstances behind the murder of a security guard at a car showroom in Deira two weeks ago.
A 25-year-old worker at the showroom allegedly murdered a guard, B.B., stabbing him 12 times before trying to take Dh500,000 from the showroom's safes.
The Dubai Police operations room received a report of a fire in a car showroom on March 7 at 7:45am.
Colonel Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Deputy Director of the Dubai Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID), said investigation and forensic science teams from the CID arrived at the scene shortly afterwards.
The security guard's room was locked and the key was missing.
After getting permission from the Public Prosecution, the CID team opened the door to find the guard lying in a pool of blood on the floor.
There were several stab wounds on different parts of his body.
The CID team found two safes at the accountant's office, located on the first floor of the showroom.
It was clear someone had tried to cut open the lockers using an oxy-fuel torch, but failed.
"A fire broke out and when the fire alarm went off, the suspect ran away," Colonel Al Mansouri said at a press conference yesterday.
He said CID teams intensified their efforts to find the suspect and interrogated a number of people who worked at the same showroom.
Interrogated
Suspicions focused on a Pakistani man identified as A.K.M. who worked in the showroom.
When first interrogated, he denied any connection to the crime. However, when interrogated again and being confronted with evidence, he confessed to killing the guard and guided police to the tools he used in his crime, and some clothes he had dumped in the garbage bin behind the showroom.
He admitted to planning to steal the showroom's money.
He bought a knife and gloves and went to the showroom at about 1am.
A.K.M. entered the showroom and found the guard sleeping.
He stabbed him several times and asked him where the money was located.
He then closed the guard room's door and went to the first floor of the showroom. A.K.M. tried opening the lockers after finding one key, but failed to find the other key. As a result, he brought an oxy-fuel torch, consisting of two cylinders, one containing oxygen and the other containing acetylene, to try and cut open the safes.
However, a fire broke out and when the fire alarm went off, he ran away after making sure the guard was dead.
"Police found his blood soaked shirt in the garbage bin behind the showroom, while the shoes that the suspect was wearing, were found on the roof of the building in Al Qusais where he lived," Colonel Al Mansouri said.
A.K.M. was detained and referred to the Public Prosecution for further investigation.
Colonel Al Mansouri said showrooms should be linked to the Civil Defence department.
He called on owners of companies and showrooms to be extra cautious when dealing with money.
They should ensure it is not openly visible to customers or workers who are not directly involved with financial matters.
