Al Ain: Two people were killed and four others injured, one of them seriously, when two high-speed trailers collided on the Al Ain-Abu Dhabi truck road on Tuesday.
The injured, all Pakistanis, have been admitted to Al Ain Hospital and the bodies of the deceased persons, a Pakistani and a Filipino, have been moved to the hospital's morgue.
The traffic police described the crash as a horrific accident which cut the trailer into pieces. The bodies of the two deceased were also damaged badly.
"It's why we say that speed kills, since it gives only a fraction of second to react if something unexpected happens on the road," said a police official. The sound of the trailers, which collided head-on, was heard in the surrounding area near She Saberah.
The official said the Filipino was driving a trailer and saw some camels crossing the road. He tried to avoid a collision with the animals and took an abrupt left turn. The speeding vehicle veered off and entered the opposite side of the road after hitting the road divider.
In the meantime, another trailer, on opposite side of the road, collided with the Filipino's trailer. The first vehicle was cut into three pieces and was dragged to several metres. The debris of both the vehicles was littered all around.
Some five people, all Pakistanis, were in the second truck and one of them, aged 41, hurled on to the road with the impact of the collision. He sustained severe injuries and died on the spot. The Filipino driver also died on the spot.
The four other occupants sustained severe to moderate injuries and were trapped inside the body of the trailer. A unit of the Police Ambulance and Rescue Section cut them free.
