Abu Dhabi: The Ministry of Justice will revise the judiciary law to pave the way for women to join the judicial corps, Justice Minister Dr Hadef Bin Jua'n Al Daheri said on Monday.
"The Justice Ministry is determined through its strategic plan to give women an opportunity in the judicial sector by amending the judiciary law, to allow them to sit on the bench," the minister told the opening session of the woman and judiciary conference.
Organised jointly by the General Women Union (GWU) and the Institute for Judicial Training and Studies under the patronage of Her Highness Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, the two day-event was attended by Kholoud Al Dhahiri, the first female judge in UAE, Mariam Al Roumi, Minister of Social Affairs, and senior Justice Ministry officials.
It was while organisers were preparing for this conference that President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan had issued a decree appointing Kholoud Ahmad Juwan Al Dhahiri as the first woman judge in the country.
'"We congratulate her for taking up the position of the first woman judge in the UAE,'" he said.
A group of UAE women trained by the institute have already started work as public prosecutors in Abu Dhabi.
Emirati women receive high standards of education, which qualifies them to join all walks of life, Daheri said.
Addressing the gathering, Noura Al Suwaidi, Director General of GWU, affirmed that remarkable achievements made by woman in the UAE were based on a solid ground of support from His Highness Shaikh Khalifa and other UAE leaders.
