Dubai: A driver has been jailed for stealing a consignment of goods worth Dh800,000 though he claimed an armed group of terrorists stole it in Iraq prior to delivery.

The Dubai Court of Misdemeanor sentenced the 26-year-old Syrian driver to one year in jail after the judge dismissed his claims and incriminated him.

The Public Prosecution charged the driver, identified as B.S., with breach of trust and misappropriating the consignment which belonged to 54-year-old Iraqi trader, A.A.

Armed group

The driver denied his charges and pleaded not guilty when he appeared in court. He accused an armed group of terrorists of ambushing his brother who was delivering the consignment of goods to Iraq's Anbar Province.

"My brother was scheduled to deliver the consignment of food and clothes when an armed group ambushed him in Al Anbar Province and stole the vehicle. I am innocent and I swear to God that I did not misappropriate the Dh800,000 consignment," B.S. said in court.

"I did collect the commodities and exported the consignment to Iraq with my brother O.A ... unluckily he was ambushed and the products were robbed. Then the armed group disappeared," he told the judge.
