Dubai: A Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) inspector has been jailed because he asked for a bribe from a man sitting with his wife in their car.
The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the 20-year-old Emirati inspector, E.A., to three months in jail and fined him Dh1,000, the same amount as the bribe.
The accused was found guilty of tricking the 23-year-old Indian man into paying him Dh1,000 so that he would not report to police that he was sitting with a woman in their car.
The complainant said he and his wife were having lunch in his car in a parking lot in the Shindagha area when the RTA inspector told him: "The UAE is a Muslim country and it is illegal to sit with a woman in a public place ... I will report you to the police unless you pay Dh1,000."
The Public Prosecution charged E.A. with tricking the victim, K.K., by telling him it was against the law to sit with a woman in a car in public. He collected $200 (Dh734) and a Dh300 bribe.
"It wasn't a bribe ... I asked him to lend me Dh1,000 because I was broke. I also took his number to contact him later and return the money," the inspector told the court earlier.
K.K. testified: "He claimed that it was against the law for a man and a woman to sit together. A friend of mine told me what the inspector did was wrong and I reported him to the police."
