Dubai: A transit passenger has been jailed for taking a woman hostage and threatening to cut her neck when police in civilian clothes tried to arrest him at Dubai airport.

The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the 36-year-old Gambian passenger to six months in jail. He will be deported after serving his punishment.

His lawyer Dr Riyadh Al Kabban of Al Kabban Advocates and Legal Consultants earlier accused the airport police of beating and provoking his client.

Dr Al Kabban blamed airport police - who wore civilian clothes, beat and chased the suspect - after he "refused to show his passport to men who didn't identify themselves (as policemen) at the transit terminal."

The Public Prosecution charged the accused with threatening to slit the neck of a 24-year-old Ukrainian woman, beating and injuring her.
