Ras Al Khaimah: A duo who used distraction tactics to steal cash from 10 stores have been arrested, the Ras Al Khaimah Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said on Tuesday.
CID said the two Asians distracted the cashiers and then stole money from the tills.
Lieutenant Colonel Salem Sultan Al Darmaki, head of the Investigation Section at the CID, said the two suspects in their mid thirties were caught while trying to take money from a shop.
He said the suspects had expanded their coverage area and robbed shops in various areas of the emirate.
Police found that one of the suspects was an illegal immigrant and the other had entered the country on a tourist visa.
Lt. Col. Al Darmaki said over the past four months one of the suspects had mastered the art of distracting the cashier as the other stole from the till.
He said various police stations received reports of cash thefts from shops. General Shaikh Taleb Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Chief of Ras Al Khaimah Police, set up a team of investigators and personally led it to resolve the case.
Lt. Col. Al Darmaki said the police put shops under surveillance and spotted the two Asians near several shops where the thefts were reported.
The police monitored them as they entered a shop seeking change for a large denomination bank-note.
He added that one of the suspects started to chat to the cashier while the other managed to reach into the till and take the money.
Lt. Col. Al Darmaki said at that moment, a police team raided the shop and caught one of the suspects with a stolen Dh3,700 in his hand.
During police investigations the suspects denied all the charges until the police summoned the victims of the theft who identified them.
Then the two suspects provided the investigators with detailed confessions about their thefts.
Police referred the suspects to Public Prosecution for further investigations.
The suspects would target a shop and one of them would chat up the cashier and distract him in the guise of seeking change for a big denomination banknote while the other stole from the till.
