Dubai: A manager who is being charged with beating his ex-wife accused her in court of being a "shameless and adulterous woman".
"My wife is adulterous, shameless and a liar ... she has a boyfriend with whom she is having a sexual affair. He moved into my villa, and they used my bedroom and my bed. They had it all planned to push me out of the house," the 40-year-old British manager told the Dubai Court of Misdemeanour on Sunday.
The Public Prosecution charged the suspect with beating his compatriot wife and injuring her.
"I am innocent and I did not assault her. I was sleeping on the couch watching television when she returned home very late and quarrelled with me. She tried to assault me and I defended myself.
"I was wearing a neck brace due to nine fractures I had sustained in my neck and back following a major car crash," he told the judge.
The Briton repeatedly denied hitting his wife.
He told the court his doctors told him he was lucky to have escaped paralysis following the accident.
He said his doctors had advised him to rest and not move around too much. When the incident happened he defended himself when the housewife tried to push him.
The manager claimed that his ex-wife's attitude and behaviour had changed. She started seeing someone and then she cheated on him.
Going out
"She started to go out with friends while I stayed at home. She returned as late as 4am and sometimes came back drunk."
The husband alleged that he had heard her spending long hours on her cell-phone speaking to her boyfriend and he even gave his name to the judge.
He handed the judge a written plea and also presented a verbal defence.
He told the court that he and his wife were divorced recently and he wanted custody of his son and stepson, because his ex-wife is "an incompetent woman to raise children".
A verdict will be passed soon.
