Dubai: A renowned Emirati footballer is being questioned over allegedly firing an unlicensed pistol in a Dubai pub, Gulf News has learnt.

The footballer, who plays for a Dubai-based soccer club, is allegedly facing charges of unlawful possession of a weapon and endangering the life of his 35-year-old compatriot employee, A.J.

Sources close to the investigation told the newspaper that the footballer had his provisional detention extended recently and is currently detained at Bur Dubai Police Station.

The alleged shot was fired at one of Dubai's pubs and the claimant reported to the police in March. The Public Prosecution has since been questioning the man.

The professional footballer is also involved in another case in which he denied before the Dubai Court of First Instance last February of kidnapping a businesswoman and locking her up in his flat.

The 26-year-old also denied a second charge of attempting to kidnap three Arab girls with the help of a compatriot. The weapon has been confiscated and sent to the forensic laboratory for examination.

Meanwhile, Sharjah police denied the involvement of another footballer, a member of the UAE's national soccer team, in the stabbing death of a man in a quarrel over the weekend.
