Dubai: A lawyer's vigilance has helped spare a man from serving a year in jail after anti-narcotics police seized in his possession a mind-altering substance which expired 13 years ago.
The 33-year-old Emirati suspect, H.Z, had the substance on a doctor's prescription, defence lawyer Mohammad Al Rehda argued before the Dubai Appeal Court.
Presiding Judge Adnan Al Farra reduced the primary ruling, one year in jail and a Dh20,000 fine, to a Dh3,000 fine.
Al Redha said in his defence: "According to clause 2 of article 40 of the Anti-Narcotics Federal Law, the suspect is supposed to be fined and not jailed. A doctor prescribed the medicine to my client who was being treated for insomnia and pain in his knee joints.."
