Dubai: An intoxicated Briton will spend a year in jail and pay Dh400,000 in blood money to the families of two tourists whom he killed in an accident after jumping a red light.
The 36-year-old British driver, M.Y., will have to pay Dh5,000 as a fine and has been banned from driving for one year after the Dubai Traffic Court of First Instance revoked his driver's licence on Wednesday.
On September 5, Gulf News published that the Traffic Public Prosecution charged the convict with reckless driving, jumping a red signal near Al Mina Road and ramming a tourists' 4x4 vehicle, killing two and injuring six others when he drove under the influence of liquor.
Presiding Judge Jassem Mohammad Ebrahim, who pronounced yesterday's ruling, said the accused will be deported after serving his punishment, paying the fine and blood money to the families of a 58-year-old British passenger, who was seated in the convict's vehicle, and a 47-year-old Pakistani national, who was seated in the tourists' car.
The initial verdict is still subject to appeal within fifteen days.
Ebrahim said in the verdict: "The accused was intoxicated when he drove his vehicle recklessly...he is responsible for the deaths and injuries. According to article Federal Law no 9, of 2003, the accused is liable to pay Dh200,000 in blood money to each of the victims' families."
The Traffic Public Prosecution earlier asked the court to hand out the toughest sentence possible to M.Y.
Salah Bu Farousha, Head of Dubai Traffic Public Prosecution, told Gulf News: "Through such rulings, we need the public to learn more about traffic laws and punishments."
