Abu Dhabi: The Red Crescent Authority (RCA) has provided a number of cell phones equipped with voice-recognition programmes to the visually challenged at the Emirates Association for the Blind (EAB).
The cell phones enable the visually challenged to interact with the community and represent a quality shift in services rendered by the RCA.
Shaikh Saqr Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, head of the Islamic Affairs and Awqaf Department in Sharjah and Head of the Emirates Association for the Blind received 90 cell phones worth Dh220,000 from Khamis Mohammad Al Suwaidi, Director of the RCA branch in Sharjah.
Shaikh Saqr praised the initiatives of the RCA and Shaikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the RCA, for their continuous support. On his part, Al Suwaidi reiterated that the RCA gives priority to people with special needs as per the instructions of Shaikh Hamdan, who personally looks over the initiatives.
"The cell phones have been equipped with spoken programmes to enable the blind to use mobile phones like others. This programme will enable them to write text messages through phones, surf the internet and direct their way in traffic," he added.
Al Suwaidi said the RCA started this project with 90 cell phones worth Dh225,000. Each cell phone costs Dh2,500 and spoken software costs Dh1,500 for each cell phone.
