Dubai: A good samaritan has donated around Dh2 million to help free inmates who have been in jail for failing to pay blood money or diya.
Last month, however, was not so good for more than 3,000 vehicle-owners whose vehicles were confiscated for violating traffic rules.
Brigadier Mohammad Al Suwaidi, Director of Dubai Police's Punitive and Correctional Establishments, praised the generous move by an Emirati businessman in Dubai who donated Dh1.97 million. The funds freed 10 inmates.
Brigadier Al Suwaidi said the donor had made many previous contributions to free inmates.
The donor, who preferred to remain anonymous, said his money is from God and he has to use it in things that satisfy God.
Major Marwan Al Jilfar, director of Jail Guarding Department and head of the Humanitarian Service Committee, said the freed inmates were Muslims who were sentenced for murder by mistake. Due to their difficult financial conditions, they could not pay the money and stayed in jail for long terms.
Brigadier Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, said the department confiscated 2,720 vehicles in Deira and 877 vehicles in Bur Dubai in January for violating road rules.
