Dubai:  Empowerment of the less privileged in society is the new approach for social welfare policy in the country, announced a senior official.

Dr Mariam Al Roumi, Minister for Social Affairs, said, during a press conference announcing the hosting of the first Gulf Festival for Social Action (GFSA), that in line with the vision of our leaders, the Ministry of Social Affairs has developed a new strategic direction to empower less privileged families. "We have a duty to help those members of our community who are less able to help themselves. The basis of the new approach is that we must help them to help themselves," she said.

She added that in the coming weeks and months, the ministry will reveal a series of public/private partnership initiatives which will bring business partners, skills and business acumen into social welfare with the aim to create the right environment in which the less privileged sections of society will be able to develop thriving businesses and commercial enterprises.

GFSA, to be held in the middle of this month at the Sharjah Culture Village, under the patronage of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, will signal the start of the new ministry's empowerment approach of less privileged national families.
